The LIGHT4EDUCATION Foundation began its activities in 2016, inspired by Natalia Gómez's vision through the SOLOSOLAR initiative, aimed at providing solar energy for education through innovative solar photovoltaic solutions. The Foundation started with co-financed projects in regions such as Putumayo, Amazonas, and Bogotá. During its operations, the Foundation identified a lack of electricity in vulnerable communities located in remote and difficult-to-access areas, where solar energy systems emerged as one of the best alternative solutions. This diagnosis led to the creation of the LIGHT4EDUCATION FOUNDATION in 2019, with the objective of developing and implementing energy solutions for schools in these communities. The goal was to enhance children's access to education and improve living conditions, thereby fostering sustainable community development. In 2020, the Jotomana project was launched in the Caribbean region (Guajira), focusing on providing electricity to a Wayuu community school through a solar energy system. This initiative positively impacted the education of children and young people while benefiting the entire community by becoming a central hub for collecting drinking water and hosting various cultural and economic activities. In 2024, following several experiences along the Colombian coast, the Foundation's direction was restructured, and four strategic lines of development were defined: energy, education, economy, and environment. The aim is now to broaden the scope of opportunities for innovative solutions and strengthen the creation of strategic alliances with local, national, and international actors, enabling the provision of comprehensive, efficient, and sustainable long-term solutions that align with the Foundation's development goals.
To achieve this, the LIGHT4EDUCATION foundation has developed the 4Es—four strategies that focus on Economy, Energy, Education, and Environment. By leveraging solar energy for education, we aim to promote sustainable community development.
With over 5 years of experience in solar energy for education, the LIGHT4EDUCATION foundation has been dedicated to implementing small systems that power schools in rural and indigenous communities. Currently, we aim to expand our efforts by offering wind and biomass energy solutions to promote sustainable community development.
At LIGHT4EDUCATION foundation, we firmly believe in the power of education. Providing solar energy for education to a vulnerable community is not enough; our goal is to enrich and empower these communities. We aim to foster sustainable community development so that they can take ownership of the solutions we provide.
The LIGHT4EDUCATION foundation is committed to educating communities through sustainable activities such as the 3Rs (reuse, recycle, reduce) and promoting concepts like a common good economy, all while harnessing solar energy for education to support sustainable community development.
Through the initiatives of the LIGHT4EDUCATION foundation and our educational tools, we strive to foster sustainable community development by preserving and harnessing natural resources with responsible care, particularly through the use of solar energy for education.
